Walking and cycling

Kajaani has a network of walking and cycling ways that is almost 185 kilometres long. They are mainly combined walking and cycling lanes. In addition to paved lanes, this extensive network includes many unpaved park walkways and cycle paths. Park walkways provide a pleasant and lively route between different residential areas.

There are some 163 kilometres of park walkways and cycle paths in the central area of Kajaani which are maintained by the city council. Additionally, there are some 40 kilometres of bicycle paths in Kajaani that are maintained by ELY centres (Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment). The central area of Kajaani is roughly five kilometres in diameter around the services of the urban centre. This compact central area provides potential for increased walking and cycling activities and enables the development of sustainable methods of getting from one place to another.

To promote cycling, new bicycle servicing points have been set up in the centre of the city, along with bicycle parking stands where cyclists can lock their bicycle frame with a chain or padlock for added security. The bicycle servicing points can be found by the Kauppatori market square, the Travel Centre and the campus of the Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.
