Kajaani has a broad range of different types of research, development and innovation services.

CEMIS (Centre for Measurement and Information Systems)

CEMIS, the Centre for Measurement and Information Systems, specialises in research and training in the field of measurement and information systems for the bioeconomy and mining sectors, sports, well-being and healthcare, as well as game and simulation technology. Through its research and development services, CEMIS produces top experts, new technology and new business for companies that create and apply measurement and information systems. The role of data, data analytics and AI is an increasing part of its operations in many sectors, and CEMIS plays a significant role in Kajaani’s data ecosystem.

CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd.

CSC Kajaani data centre is home to Finland’s national data computing and data management environment.  The data centre is also home to LUMI, one of the world’s most efficient supercomputers, used for research and a leading platform for artificial intelligence.

University of Oulu, Measurement Technology Research Unit (MITY)

The Measurement Technology Research Unit was founded in 1991 and re-organised in 2011 by combining the Kajaani University Consortium’s units of measurement technology and analytics. MITY consists of two research groups: Cleantech and Health & Wellbeing.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd.

VTT MIKES-Kajaani offers companies services in the calibration and research of measuring instruments for power, mass, torque and water flow. VTT MIKES-Kajaani acts as the national laboratory for measurement standards as regards power, torque and mass. It has an Applied Metrology Research Unit in Kajaani that cooperates with CEMIS by acting as the expert in scientific measurement and measurement technology in its projects. The Kajaani unit also includes some members of VTT’s research group which studies wireless solutions.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK)

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences engages in business-oriented research, development and innovation (RDI) activities with SMEs in all its key competence areas. This is done through projects where the companies act as the university’s partner and as sources of direct assignments. The university provides the companies with research and testing during the product development phase, as well as larger research projects.
