Kajaani Art Museum was opened to the public in April 1993. The museum's exhibition rooms are located in the former police house designed by architect Eino Pitkänen. Completed in 1936, the building is an example of pure functionalist style. The fenced yard outside its northern wing leads to the old Town Hall which dates back to 1831.

One of the main tasks of the museum is the provision of art education. Through its exhibitions of both international and local works of art the museum aims to present a broad and comprehensive picture of art to wide audience from all social groups.

A MATTER OF PLAY
12 Dec 2019 – 2 Feb, 2020
Kaarina Kuusisto-Lukkari, Hannele Pussinen, Heidi Stålnacke

The works by Kainuu-based artists Kaarina Kuusisto-Lukkari and Hannele Pussinen as well as Oulu-based artist Heidi Stålnacke are similar in their humour and the use of everyday objects and recycled materials. The playful works sometimes convey troublesome and serious issues, behind the colourful and joyful surface of the exhibition there are sombre tones as well.

VÄREILYÄ – OF COLOUR AND EMOTION

Until 23 Aug, 2020

Producer Emilia Hyvönen and artist educator Saara Karjalainen from the Kainuu Centre of Children’s and Youth’s Culture have curated a children’s exhibition which thematically focuses on colour and emotions. The colour pieces are picked from the art museum’s own collection and they are surrounded with experiential colour adventure activities. The underlying thought is that colours have a strong impact on emotions and on recognicing and experiencing them.

MARJATTA TAPIOLA: PAINTINGS 2017-2020

Marjatta Tapiola’s exhibition has been rescheduled, now moving to the summer of 2021.

Marjatta Tapiola’s exhibition gathers together her paintings from the years 2017-2020. Many of the long-term themes of her art, such as monumental sculls and bulls from Greek mythology are present in the exhibition. The most recent works depicting dramatic scenes from the Bible are strongly connected with the history of classical art. The exhibition is completed with India inspired animal motifs and a series of rarely exhibited colour litographs.

HEIKKI’S PICKS

10 Sep – 8 Nov, 2020

Heikki’s picks is an exhibition curated by Heikki Aranne, displaying and highlighting the art museum’s own collection. Aranne worked as the director of the Kajaani Art Museum in 1997-2015. He picked the nature themed artworks from the art museum’s collection solely by being himself, without listening to anybody else:

For us living in Kainuu, nature and forests have always been important. We have come a long way as have the artists of this exhibition by reshaping nature by sculpting, painting and drawing it.

EEVA-MAIJA PENTTILÄ: TO THE SKIES

29 Nov, 2020 – 31 Jan, 2021

The memorial exhibition of Eeva-Maija Penttilä (1948-2017) displays graphic art and acrylic paintings throughout the Kajaani-based artist’s long career. The central elements in her work are light and shadow, air, water and fire. Also rarely seen animal theme that she worked on after traveling in Australia is on display.
