The teaching work at comprehensive schools in the City of Kajaani is of a high level. Schools always follow the curriculum that is based on the latest guidelines. The operations of the schools are constantly being evaluated and developed. In the City of Kajaani there are 13 comprehensive schools located in different neighborhoods.
Enrollment in the first (1st) grade of comprehensive school takes place in December. An orientation is arranged for families of newly enrolled children during week two (2).
There are two schools in the Lehtikangas district: Lehtikangas school (Lehtikankaan koulu) and Soidinsuo school (Soidinsuon koulu).
Lehtikangas school (Lehtikankaan koulu) has grades 1-9. Pupils are enrolled from the so-called old Lehtikangas district and Prikaati district.
Soidinsuo school has grades 1-6. The pupil catchment areas are on the south side of the Rinnekatu district. The pupils of Soidinsuo school (Soidinsuon koulu) continue upper comprehensive school at the Lehtikangas school (Lehtikankaan koulu) in 7-9 grades. At the Soidinsuo school (Soidinsuon koulu) two (2) classes of first graders start their school each year.
North side of Kajaaninjoki river
There are five (5) schools on the northside of Kajaaninjoki river: the schools of Nakertaja, Teppana, Kätönlahti, Jormua, and Kuluntalahti. In these schools grades 1-6 of mainstream education is taught. 1-6 graders from the districts of Nakertaja, Hetteenmäki, and Paltaniemi are admitted to the school of Nakertaja (Nakertajan koulu). 7-9 graders continue upper comprehensive school at the Kajaani lyceum.
Teppana school will admit 1-6 graders from the neighboring areas of Kuusanmäki,Teppana, Karolineburg, and if necessary, Kättö-Kuurna. 7-9 graders continue upper comprehensive school at the Kajaani lyceum. Kätönlahti school will admit pupils from the neighboring areas of Kätönlahti and Kättö-Kuurna. In addition, 1-6 graders from the districts of Heinisuo, Hannusranta, Kirkkoaho, Lehtomäki, and Pärsänsuo will be admitted. 7-9 graders continue upper comprehensive school at the Kajaani lyceum. 1-6 graders from the Jormua and Kuluntalahti districts will be divided into Jormua and Kuluntalahti schools following the local school principle as well as the efficiency of school transportation. 7-9 graders continue their upper comprehensive school at the Kajaani lyceum.
South side of Kajaaninjoki river and the west side of the main train line
There are six (6) schools in this district: Otanmäki, Vuolijoki, and Lohtaja schools, as well as Keskuskoulu school, Seminaarin koulu school, and Kajaani Lyceum. Otanmäki school has 1-9 grades. Students are admitted from the neighboring areas and 7-9 graders enroll from the district belonging to the former Vuolijoki municipality. 1-6 grades are held at the Vuolijoki school. Pupils are admitted to the school from the district belonging to the former Vuolijoki village as well as the western part of the former Vuolijoki municipality. 7-9 graders continue at the upper comprehensive school of Otanmäki.
1-6 graders from the districts of Lohtaja-Huuhkajavaara and Kettu will be admitted at the Lohtaja school. The northern border for enrolling pupils is Sokajärventie. 7-9 graders continue at the upper comprehensive school of Keskuskoulu. Pupils from the districts of Keskusta (City Center), Purola, Puistola, and Onnela will be admitted to the Keskuskoulu school. This includes pupils who are transported from the districts of Mainua, Vuoreslahti, Koutaniemi, Parkinniemi, Hevossuo, and Teerisuo. In addition, sixth (6) graders from the school of Lohtaja will enroll at the school of Keskuskoulu for grades 7-9. First (1st) and second (2nd) graders enrolled at the Seminaarin koulu school will continue third (3rd) grade at the Keskuskoulu school. Kajaani lyceum offers grades 7-9. Those pupils who went to the primary schools of Teppana, Kätönlahti, Nakertaja, Jormua, or Kuluntalahti will continue their education at the Kajaani lyceum.
