The City of Kajaani wishes to boost corporate growth, create opportunities for viable business transactions and to achieve the growth objectives set in the urban strategy. It is the centre and capital of the Kainuu region and in many senses its engine. The town’s role as the centre of excellence and concentration of innovations is prominent in the enterprise and industrial policy of Kajaani. We encourage and develop attraction and competitiveness factors and, in particular, the viability of local enterprises where also the public procurement of the City plays an important role.

The urban strategy is implemented through the City’s business programme.  The programme covers widely the operations and activities of the city consortium which have a significant direct or indirect impact on business opportunities. The city organisation is a part of the cooperation network of business services in the central town with jointly agreed objectives of urban development stated in the business programme. The Mayor steers the City business and trade policy with the support of Kajaani City Business and Trade Team which is composed of the persons in charge of services related to the key business transactions of the city consortium. The Head of Office works under the authority of the Mayor and is in charge of urban development and business and trade issues. We cooperate directly on the grass root level with enterprises and entrepreneurs to develop their business operation and increase job opportunities in enterprises.

Closing of UPM Paper Works in 2008 was a heavy blow to a town living off wood. However, successful restructuring took place and introduced more diversified and stronger business and trade structure in town. A new industrial district was created in the old paper works site with far more jobs available than were lost with the works closing. As the mining sector was growing at the same time, it provided hundreds of new jobs opportunities in the region. The ICT sector in Kajaani with its long history has remained and evolved as a global industry on the cutting edge of metrology. ICT has been expanded and diversified by game industry and data centre services. The metal industry continues to be one of the corner stones of the business and industrial sector.

In Kajaani we can provide enterprises with competent workers, excellent and easily accessible business and trade services and extensive EU and national corporate financing services. Kajaani as the urban centre has all the basic everyday services as well as recreational facilities and the concentration of specialist shops and boutiques in the region. Thanks to short distances life is easy-going. Kajaani and Kainuu offer an enormous amount of cultural events and Vuokatti in the neighbouring municipality of Sotkamo, half an hour away, is the largest recreational centre in Finland.
