When walking through Paltaniemi village, the visitor can feel the colourful and interesting history of the village seeping through age-old patina of buildings, the pines by the road to the museum and old cemeteries.

Sights in Paltaniemi include Paltaniemi Church, famous for its exquisite murals and paintings in the ceiling as well as Eino Leino House, a building resembling the house where Eino Leino was born, with the poet’s works on display. In summer, a cafe is open in the house and poetry reading is organised in the evenings to delight visitors with the mood of poems. The grounds include also the Paltaniemi theatre stage, Lystinurmi house with its exhibitions, traditional playground with tiny cottages and campfire ring. If hungry, you can bring sausages to fry on a stick. The house has a wonderful view over Paltaselkä.

Keisarintalli, the Emperor’s Stables in English, next to the church, tells about The Emperor of Russia, Alexander the First’s visit to Kainuu.
