History of Kajaani
Kajaani was founded on 6th March 1651 when Count Per Brahe, who was visiting Kajaani Castle, announced its privileges, or town rights. The town grew slowly for a long time, due to its remote location and poor road connections.
Kajaani Castle played an important role in the early history of the town, as it served as the administrative and military centre of the eastern part of the kingdom of Sweden-Finland. It is thus indeed justified that the castle should also be displayed in Kajaani's coat of arms, which was designed by Olof Eriksson in 1958.
The old coat of arms from the late 19th century is shown on the right-hand side below and the present one on the left.
